Book a ConsultationWhy Breed?
Breeding should be a carefully considered decision. Consider your goals, the mare's suitability as a brood mare, the costs involved, and the time commitment required from conception through to the foal's weaning and beyond.
What You Need
Successful breeding requires a sound mare, a suitable stallion, proper veterinary support, appropriate facilities, and a clear plan. Both mare and stallion should undergo breeding soundness examinations before any breeding attempt.
Where to Breed
Breeding can take place at a veterinary clinic, a breeding facility, or on your property with mobile veterinary support. The best location depends on the breeding method being used and the individual circumstances.
When to Breed
The natural breeding season for horses in the Southern Hemisphere runs from September through to February. Mares cycle approximately every 21 days with oestrus lasting 5-7 days. Precise timing of insemination relative to ovulation is critical for success.
How It Works
Modern breeding typically involves artificial insemination with monitoring by ultrasound to time insemination with ovulation. This approach maximises conception rates and allows the use of fresh, chilled, or frozen semen from stallions that may not be locally available.
