Lameness Care and Prevention for Horses in Brisbane, Ipswich and Lockyer Valley
Regardless of its severity, lameness causes your horse pain.
Using diagnostic nerve blocks with local anesthetics, the source of your horse’s lameness can be identified faster.
At our practice, we use a range of nerve and joint blocks during lameness examinations to reveal the structures involved. Nerve blocks effectively numb regions of your horse’s limbs, which gives immediate relief, while assisting us in making an accurate diagnosis and commencing treatment.
What is the advantage of nerve blocks?
Local anaesthetics selectively eliminate a nerve’s ability to conduct a nerve impulse, thus blocking the brain’s ability to receive sensations of pain. This means your horse won’t experience any pain during the procedure.
In addition, the local anaesthetic agents we use have a rapid onset of action – usually five minutes from injection – and very few side effects other than minor swelling at the injection site; enabling us to make a faster diagnosis.
